Banco de Moçambique has deployed a multilingual AI assistant powered by Proto and its regional partner Eclectics International to improve citizens' access to reliable financial information and strengthen consumer protection.

The deployment is part of the central bank's broader commitment to financial literacy and inclusion, aiming to equip citizens with the knowledge needed to make informed financial decisions. The AI agent fetches real-time data directly from the central bank's website — such as reports, exchange rates, and other key financial indicators — helping consumers and businesses avoid misinformation and financial fraud.

Beyond real-time data, the AI agent provides easy access to legislation, decrees, bulletins, and market calendars, ensuring transparency around the government's regulation of the financial sector. It also raises awareness of national financial inclusion strategies and the central bank's efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability. This knowledge sharing capability also serves central bank and regulated institutions staff, who need rapid access to the latest data.

The solution features a secure on-premise system architecture that meets the central bank's data security and sovereignty requirements. Within this architecture, the AI agent has been specifically trained on Mozambican financial policies and legislation, allowing it to provide accurate, locally relevant information while maintaining compliance with all regulatory frameworks.

Available in both English and Portuguese, the Proto AI agent is deployed across multiple channels including WhatsApp and the official website of the Bank of Moçambique — ensuring accessibility for all citizens regardless of digital habits or language preference.

Eclectics Executive Director Paul Mbugua said: “Our collaboration with Proto has already shown great promise in enhancing the financial services landscape in Africa. With this deployment at the Bank of Mozambique, we are excited to deepen our impact and reach to drive digital transformation tailored to African financial institutions."

This initiative forms part of Proto's wider work across Africa, including with regulators in Namibia and Rwanda, to ensure that citizens receive accessible and inclusive recourse within their financial and digital services. Mozambique now joins a growing group of financial authorities committed to improving outcomes for consumers with AI-powered tools designed for the local context.

Proto CEO Curtis Matlock said: "Our partnership with Eclectics in Africa continues to evolve beyond financial services — now into the government domain where Proto provides a critical AI infrastructure layer. It is an honour to be trusted by the Banco de Moçambique as they deploy AI-enabled financial education and complaints resolution for their citizens."

Proto’s application of conversational AI to the government sector goes back to 2019, when the Central Bank of the Philippines demonstrated the system’s performance at scale. Today, the AI-powered assistant is processing over 276,000 support sessions annually, facilitated 14.4 million messages, and resolved 89% of queries without human intervention. These outcomes enabled the AI agent to absorb a dramatic surge in complaints during the COVID pandemic without expanding operational overhead.

The AI agent for the Banco de Moçambique is deployed within the Proto platform, which provides omnichannel automation, ticketing, and social media analysis for public services in emerging markets. The deployment was made possible through Proto's longstanding partnership with Eclectics, a leading provider of digital solutions for African financial institutions including Ecobank, Standard Bank, and KCB Bank.
